Highroad Reopen Plans as of June 1st

Dear parents,

Starting on June 1, classes will be reopening for students to return. In preparation for students returning, we wanted to share some information based on what we know right now. In these strange and interesting times, these plans may change as the first day back arrives and we see how things flow. However, I wanted to connect with you and provide you with some items to consider.

First of all, as the BC Government has stated, returning to school is voluntary. After reviewing the plans laid out by our school admin, you are able to decide what is best for your child and decide whether to send your child back to school.

Here is a list of changes and procedures we have developed to help follow the social distancing and safety guidelines and recommendations put forward by the BC government:

  • Students will be returning in smaller groups. As recommended by the BC Government, class sizes are being split in half to accommodate social distancing guidelines. At this point, the school admin have designated Mondays and Wednesdays as the days for students with last names starting from A-L. Tuesdays and Thursdays will be for students whose last names begin with the letters M-Z. Unfortunately, we can not consider placing students based on friendship groupings as that becomes too difficult logistically.
  • Blogs and Google Classroom will still be used to provide learning activities for all students. Students returning to school will do a combination of activities related to what has been posted online and extension/supplementary activities along with Health/Bible, Library and Gym. Students staying at home will still be able to access the activities provided online. However, items like morning meetings, instructional videos, read alouds, etc. will not be provided as teachers work to maintain in-class learning.
  • Our school week will also look a little different. We will be starting school at the normal time. However, we will be ending school at 2:30. This allows teachers the opportunity to contact students who are at home. In school classes will also not be operating on Fridays, to allow teachers time to connect with students at home.
  • For Grade 6: Students will only be in school on Mondays (Students with last names starting with A-L) and Tuesdays (Students with last names starting with M-Z) depending on their last name. The rest of the week, Grade 6 teachers will continue to be available to connect with students at home, answering questions and checking-in.
  • School drop-off and pick-up procedures: In order to minimize the number of students congregating before and after school, we would ask that you attempt to drop your child off as close to the starting bell as possible so that students can go to class right away. Classes will be open at 8:45. At the end of the day, students will be taken outside by their teacher and lined-up. Parents can collect their child from the line-up or children will be released as their parents are spotted arriving in their vehicles. As we are trying to minimize numbers of students congregating and practice social distancing, students can not be released straight from classrooms to the playgrounds or field areas. Please collect your child as close to 2:30 as possible.

  • Uniforms and Gym: Students are allowed to wear their Knight clothes to school instead of their school uniforms. Students will not be changing for gym classes and will not need their PE uniforms.
    • Recesses and lunch will be staggered to keep the number of students in our outdoor spaces to a minimum. Students will be encouraged to avoid physical contact with other students while inside and outside.
    • Please bring water bottles: As our water fountains will be closed to students, students should bring a refillable water bottle.
  • Supplies: For those students returning, please send all materials that were sent home so that students have items to use while at school. Math workbook, Math Test book, Journal, pencils, pencil crayons, pencil case, crayon box, ruler, eraser and sharpener. These items will be kept in the student’s desk and then taken home on their last day of school.

  •  Social Distancing Considerations: While we will attempt to follow the guidelines set out by the BC Government as best as possible, students may still be in close contact with other students. However, especially during outside periods, the focus will be on limiting physical human contact between students. Students and staff will have the option of wearing masks while at school. Desks will be reduced and spaced to provide distance between students, while in class and hand washing will be done several times a day. While the Government has stated that outdoor playgrounds are safe to use, staggered recesses, closing the Ga-Ga Ball pit and specifying that there should be no physical contact will all be put into place to help with social distancing.

  • Student Health: Prior to sending your child to school each morning, we would ask that you check for signs of illness, including taking your child’s temperature. If you find signs of a fever or other signs of illness, we would ask that you keep your child at home. Whether you feel that it might be allergies or something else not Covid related, we would rather you err on the safe side. If a child shows signs of illness while at school, students will be isolated and parents informed that their child needs to be picked up immediately.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

We miss seeing all our students. Their smiles, laughter, sparkling eyes and individual personalities are all things we have missed tremendously over these last weeks. We recognize that this reopening is not school as normal. Highroad Academy is working hard to provide a safe environment for our students while also trying to provide an opportunity for students to connect with their teachers and fellow classmates before the end of the year. However, we certainly understand if the guidelines feel too onerous or scary for your child. With the information that has been provided, please feel free to make your decision based on your own family and circumstances. If you have any further questions, please email our Elementary Department Head, Ian Hancock, to get more information.

To all the amazing families we have at Highroad who have journeyed with us in these trying times, we want to say thank you. Thank you for your grace. Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your support and prayers. Whichever decision you make, please know that we are praying for you, missing you and looking forward to the day when we will be together again as a Highroad community.

Blessings,

Mr. Hancock and your teacher, Miss Stark

For the Week of April 27th to May 1st

*Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Good morning Grade Threes. I hope everyone had a great weekend. Eight more weeks of school before summer holidays. This week instead of connecting with you by phone, I would like to do a video call. At your designated time, I will e-mail you a link from Google Meet, and then you click on the link and follow the prompts. Hopefully it will work.

Here is the Chapel video Mrs. Caswell, Mrs. Schlitt and Mrs. Dekoff  created for you this week:

Here is what I would like you to work on for this week.

**Memorize/ Review Scripture Memory for the month of April, Hebrews 11:6 (NIV).

Monday and Tuesday:

Spelling:

  1. Practice/Review Phonograms.
  2. Practice spelling list words P1.
  3. Go to the Spelling City web site and do one game or activity with the P1 list words.

 Reading:

  1. Silently read a story book from your home selection, for 20 minutes. Not a comic book. Or choose a book from Epic Kids or Raz-kids. You must have a complete story read by Tuesday evening. Perhaps you started one on Saturday and can finish it by Tuesday.

As you read or listen to the story, think about the following:

Who are the main characters in the story?

What is the setting of the story?

What is the problem in the story?

How is the problem solved?

 Math:

  • Memorize the skip counts by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11.
  • Monday will be a Math Test. Go to the Math-U-See Test Booklet and do Test 14, only.

*Remember to show your work for the word problems and give the unit measurements with your answer where needed, (for example: cm., km., m., ft., etc.).

*Remember your Mom, Dad, Auntie or Grandparent must mark your test and put the score at the top of the first page of the test.

  • Do your Test 14 corrections. If you get a question wrong, it should be marked with an X. When you correct your answer to that question then a C is put on the question number to show that you have done the correction correctly. We only learn from our mistakes.
  • Tuesday will be a Math handout on 2 Digit Subtraction with Regrouping.
  • Print it out and do it. Or copy the questions neatly onto lined paper and do them.
  • An adult needs to mark it and put the score at the top of the handout.
  • Do your corrections and have an adult check them over. If they are correct, then a C needs to be put on the questions’ number so that I can tell if it has been corrected.

2 Digit Subtraction with Regrouping handout:

click on the above highlighted title to the subtraction handout and drop down box, to see it.

Afternoon:

-Go outside and have some fun! If you didn’t get everything done today that is okay. Work on it tomorrow. Play tag, look for bugs, or look at all the pretty flowers. Play a game of soccer with your siblings or shoot some hoops. Bounce a ball and create your own game.

Wednesday and Thursday:

Spelling:

  1. Practice/Review Phonograms.
  2. Practice spelling list words P1.
  3. Go to the Spelling City web site and do one game or activity with the P1 list words.

Reading and Writing:

Now that you have finished reading your story book, you are going to do some writing. It has been awhile since you have used your writing muscles so let’s review some important rules and expectation for writing.

    1. Get a sheet of lined paper.
    2. On the very top line, put your name to the left hand side and your date to the right hand side of that line. Print neatly.
    3. On the second line down, near the margin, print the title to the storybook which you have just finished reading.
  • Put the number 1 in the margin and answer the first question with a full sentence.
  • Now skip a line from your answer and put number 2 in the margin. Answer the next question with a full sentence. Then continue like you did for numbers 1 and 2.
  • Print neatly. Remember sentences start with a capital letter and end with a period.
  • An adult needs to check over your work with an undistracted view.

*Parents please check spelling and punctuation. If the sentence rambles on help your child with the sentence structure.

  1. Please do your writing corrections and have an adult check it over again. No tears. Remember we learn from our mistakes.

Here are the Reading questions to answer in full sentences:

  • Who are the main characters in the story?
  • Write two things about each main character.
  • What is the setting of the story?
  • What is the problem in the story?
  • How is the problem solved?
  • What do you like about this story?
  • What is your favorite part, and explain why?
  • Do you think this author is a Christian author, why or why not? (Hint: What clues are in the story to suggest that this author might be a Christian writer?)

Math:

  1. Memorize the skip counts by 2 to 11.
  2. Practice the multiplication tables from 2 to 11.
  3. Any Math to finish from Monday and Tuesday?

Afternoon:

-Go outside and have some fun!

Friday, the last day to get things done.

This is a Pro-D Day for the teachers, but you still need to have your assignments completed and submitted to me by 3pm today.

 Spelling:

  1. Practice spelling list P1 once more.
  2. Take the test. Your parents or adult need to dictate the words to you out of order.

**Remember:

  • Neat work counts.
  • Use lined paper, if you have it.
  • Name to the left on the top line, proper date to the right on the top line.
  • Title: Spelling Test P1, centered on the second line.
  • Number your page 1 to 20.

**Parents please mark the spelling test and put a score at the top of the page. Then submit it to me.

 Reading and Writing:

    1. Have you finished answering your storybook Reading questions? If not, do so. They are due today.
    2. Do your punctuation, spelling and sentence structure corrections.
    3. Ask your parents or Auntie or Grandparent to check over your corrections.
    4. Check it over yourself. Does it look neat? Did you do your best printing? Did you print on the given lines or are your words floating? Is there proper spacing between your words?
  • Now submit it to me.

             5. Silently read a story book or a free read book for 20 minutes.

Math:

  1. Have you finished your Math Test 14 and your 2 Digit Subtraction with Regrouping handout?
  • Then submit it to me.

Congratulations you have finished the assignments for this week!

Go and have some fun outside.

Have a great weekend.

For the Week of April 20th to 24th

Good morning. I thought I would do my blog schedule for the week rather than two days at a time. I hope this is helpful.

Monday and Tuesday:

Spelling:

  1. Practice /Review Phonograms.
  2. Practice spelling list words O6.
  3. Go to the Spelling City web site and do one game or one activity with the O6 list words.

Reading:

  1. Silently read a story book from your home selection, for 20 minutes. Not a comic book. Or choose a book from Epic Kids or Raz kids. I will e-mail your parents your password for Raz kids.

Math:

  1. Memorize the skip counts by 2, 3, 4 ,5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. Try to say them out loud without any mistakes.
  2. Start the Math-U-See workbook p.14E. For Monday and Tuesday, only do numbers 1 to 15.

**Remember to find perimeter you add the sides of the given shape. Your answer is not square something, because you are only using the outside measurements. It is like walking around the outside, (perimeter), of the shape. Area is times, because you are measuring the space inside the shape and then the answer has to have square something, with it.

3. Show your work for numbers 13, 14 and 15. Neat work is still important.

4. Any corrections? There should be no tears. You are expected to do them, just like in school. We learn from our mistakes. If we do not take the time to do our corrections then we learn things incorrectly.

*Parents please look at your child’s work with an undistracted view. Please mark numbers 1 to 15 with a check mark if they are correct and an x if they are wrong. Put a C on the question number when you child has corrected it. No score yet on this page.

Afternoon: It is time for some outside play. Have fun! Be kind.

Wednesday and Thursday:

Spelling:

  1. Practice /Review Phonograms.
  2. Practice spelling list words O6.
  3. Go to the Spelling City web site and do one game or one activity with the O6 list words.

Reading:

  1. Silent Reading for 20 min. A storybook of your choice. Perhaps you are still reading the story you started on Monday. That is great! Keep going.
  2. When you have finished your storybook, discuss it with your Mom, Dad, Auntie or Grandparent. Tell them the following:
  • the main characters;
  • the setting of the story, (where it takes place);
  • the problem in the story;
  • how the problem was solved;
  • your opinion of the story— was it an interesting and exciting story? Why or why not?
  • do you think the author is a Christian writer? Why or why not? What are the clues in the story to suggest the writer is a Christian?

Math:

  1. Review/memorize the skip counts by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11.
  2. Go back to the Math-U-See workbook p.14E and finish the page. Do numbers 16 to 20 neatly.

*Remember show how you got your answers in the word problems. Just like we did in class. Number 20 is tricky. Take the challenge and try. You can do it! Be neat, just like in class.

3. Any corrections? Do them, please. Remember we learn from our mistakes.

**Parents please look at your child’s work with an undistracted view. Please mark numbers 16 to 20 with a check mark if they are correct, and an x if they are wrong. Put a C on the question number when you child has corrected it. Put the overall score for this workbook page at the top of the first side.

***Your Math workbook page must be done by Thursday afternoon. Four days is more than enough time to do your Math.

Afternoon: Time for playing outside. Have fun!

Friday, the last day to get things done:

Spelling:

  1. Practice spelling list O6 once more.
  2. Take the test. Your parents need to dictate the words to you out of order.

***Remember:

  • neat work counts;
  • Use lined paper, if you have it.
  • Name to the left on the top line, proper date to the right on the top line;
  • Title centered on the second line;
  • number your page 1 to 20.

**Parents please mark the spelling test and put a score at the top of the page. Then submit it to me.

  • the main characters;

  • how the problem was solved;
  • your opinion of the story— was it an interesting and exciting story? Why or why not?
  • do you think the author is a Christian writer? Why or why not? What are the clues in the story to suggest the writer is a Christian?
